Time Management in the Goethe B1 Exam

How to budget your minutes across all four Goethe-Zertifikat B1 modules so you never run out of time.

Why Timing Matters

Every B1 module is scored out of 100 points, and you pass at 60%. Many candidates lose points not because they don't know the answer, but because they run out of time — getting stuck on one hard item or forgetting to transfer answers. A simple time plan fixes most of this.

The Four Modules at a Glance

Module Total time Parts Rough pacing
Lesen (reading) 65 min 5 Teile ~12 min/Teil + time to transfer answers
Hören (listening) ~40 min 4 Teile Audio sets the pace; read in the pauses
Schreiben (writing) 60 min 3 Aufgaben ~20 / ~25 / ~15 min
Sprechen (speaking) ~15 min 3 Teile Use the preparation time well

Module-by-Module Advice

Lesen (65 min) - Don't get stuck. If an item is hard, guess and move on — you can return later. - Watch the clock so you keep a balanced pace across all 5 Teile. - Leave a few minutes to transfer your answers to the answer sheet correctly.

Hören (~40 min) - The audio sets the pace — you can't slow it down. - Read the questions in the pauses before each section so you know what to listen for. - If you miss something, let it go and focus on the next item; don't freeze.

Schreiben (60 min) - Budget roughly: ~20 min for Aufgabe 1, ~25 min for Aufgabe 2, ~15 min for Aufgabe 3. - Reserve a few minutes at the end to check spelling, verb endings, and word order. - Don't overwrite one task and starve the others — watch your time per Aufgabe.

Sprechen (~15 min) - Use the preparation time well to jot down keywords for your presentation and ideas for the planning task. - Keep an eye on balance in the paired tasks so you neither rush nor stall.

General Tips

  • Wear a watch (a silent analogue one) — you can't rely on a wall clock.
  • Do the easy items first, then come back to the hard ones.
  • Never leave a blank. An educated guess can score; an empty box never does.
  • Note the time when each module starts so you always know how much is left.

Common Mistakes

  • Spending five minutes on one impossible reading item.
  • Forgetting to transfer answers before time is called.
  • Writing a beautiful Aufgabe 1 but rushing Aufgabe 3.
  • Not reading the listening questions during the pauses.
  • Leaving questions blank instead of guessing.
