The Goethe B1 exam at a glance

The Goethe-Zertifikat B1 has four modules: Lesen, Hören, Schreiben and Sprechen. Each is scored out of 100 and passed on its own at 60 points, so you can take, pass or retake modules separately. The written modules take about 2 h 45 min; Sprechen takes about 15 minutes in pairs.

Questions people ask

F1How many points do I need to pass the Goethe B1?
60 out of 100 in each module. In Lesen and Hören that means 18 of 30 correct answers. Each module is passed on its own, so a strong Lesen score cannot make up for a weak Hören.
F2Is there a free Goethe B1 mock test?
Yes. The free tests on goetheb1.com include all four modules with scoring and AI writing feedback; you only need a free account. The Goethe-Institut also publishes one official practice set on goethe.de.
F3Can I retake only one module?
Yes. The Goethe-Zertifikat B1 is modular: you can take the four modules together or separately and retake only the ones you did not pass, as often as your exam centre has places. Here you can practise any module on its own, too.
F4How many times is the Hören audio played?
In the exam, Teil 1 and Teil 4 are played twice, Teil 2 and Teil 3 only once. In our mock tests every recording has a play limit, shown above the player.
F5How long should the Schreiben texts be?
About 80 words for Aufgabe 1 (an informal email) and Aufgabe 2 (your opinion), and about 40 words for Aufgabe 3 (a short formal message). You have 60 minutes for all three.
F6How does the AI writing feedback work?
Each task is marked on the four Goethe criteria (task fulfilment, coherence, vocabulary, structures) on the official A–E scale and converted to points. You also get every mistake corrected and explained, better phrasings and a corrected version of your text. It is a practice estimate, not an official grade.
F7Does the Goethe B1 certificate expire?
No. Goethe-Institut certificates have no expiry date. Some employers, universities or authorities ask for a recent certificate, so check what yours requires.
F8Are you the Goethe-Institut? Do you sell certificates?
No. goetheb1.com is an independent practice platform, not affiliated with the Goethe-Institut e.V. We never sell or arrange certificates: the only way to get a Goethe-Zertifikat is to pass the exam at a Goethe-Institut or a licensed exam centre.
