How Schreiben is scored

Each task is marked on four criteria: Erfüllung (did you cover every point?), Kohärenz (is the text well connected?), Wortschatz (vocabulary) and Strukturen (grammar). Two examiners mark independently and their results are averaged to a score out of 100; you pass with 60.

In the goetheb1.com mock tests an AI marks each task on the same four criteria and shows every correction. Read how our AI grading works, and its limits. Connectors help with Kohärenz: B1 connectors.

Frequently asked

F1What happens if I write too few words?
The word counts are guidelines, not hard limits. A text that is much too short usually cannot cover all points, which costs marks for task fulfilment.
F2Should I use du or Sie in Schreiben?
Aufgabe 1 is written to a friend, so use du. Aufgabe 3 is a formal message, so use Sie with a formal greeting and closing.
F3How is Schreiben marked?
On four criteria: Erfüllung (task fulfilment), Kohärenz (coherence), Wortschatz (vocabulary) and Strukturen (structures). Two examiners mark it and the results are averaged.
