Goethe B1 Lesen Teil 3: matching people to ads

A simple strategy for the advertisement-matching task in the Reading module.

Lesen Teil 3: matching people to advertisements

In Teil 3 of the Goethe B1 Reading module you match 7 people to 10 short advertisements. One person has no matching ad — the answer is X.

A 3-step strategy

  1. Read the person first. Underline the concrete need: a time ("am Abend"), a place ("in der Nähe der Uni"), or a topic ("vegetarisch kochen").
  2. Scan the ads for that need, not for matching words. The exam often uses synonyms — "günstig" in the ad for "billig" in the person's text.
  3. Eliminate. Cross off ads as you use them. If two ads seem to fit, the more specific match is usually correct.

Common traps

  • An ad that shares a keyword but contradicts the need (e.g. a morning course when the person can only attend evenings).
  • Spending too long on one person — if you're unsure, mark X or your best guess and move on. You have ~65 minutes for the whole module.
