The future tense (Futur I)

What is Futur I?

The future tense (Futur I) is formed with the conjugated verb werden plus the infinitive at the end of the sentence.

• Ich werde morgen nach Berlin fahren. (I will travel to Berlin tomorrow.)
• Wir werden das Problem lösen. (We will solve the problem.)

Uses of Futur I

Futur I is used for several meanings:

• Predictions: Morgen wird es regnen. (It will rain tomorrow.)
• Intentions / promises: Ich werde dir helfen. (I will help you.)
• Assumptions about the present, often with wohl: Er wird jetzt wohl zu Hause sein. (He is probably at home now.)
• Determination: Ich werde das schaffen! (I will manage it!)

German often uses the present tense for the future

Very importantly, German frequently expresses the future with the present tense plus a time word. This is the most common way to talk about planned future events.

• Morgen fahre ich nach Berlin. (Tomorrow I'm travelling to Berlin.)
• Nächste Woche fängt der Kurs an. (Next week the course starts.)
• Heute Abend treffe ich Freunde. (This evening I'm meeting friends.)

Futur I is then used mainly for emphasis, promises or assumptions.

Word order

werden is the conjugated verb and stands in position 2 (V2); the infinitive goes to the very end of the clause.

• Ich werde dich am Bahnhof abholen. (I will pick you up at the station.)

Common mistakes

• Wrong: Ich werde morgen fahre. — Correct: Ich werde morgen fahren (the second verb must be an infinitive).
• Wrong: Ich werde fahren morgen. — Correct: Ich werde morgen fahren (infinitive goes to the end).
• Wrong: Er wird wohl zu Hause. — Correct: Er wird wohl zu Hause sein (the infinitive sein is needed).
• Wrong: Du werdest kommen. — Correct: Du wirst kommen (correct conjugation of werden).
• Wrong: using Futur I for every future event — often the present tense is more natural: Morgen fahre ich nach Berlin.

Relevance for the Goethe B1 exam

Futur I and the present-for-future pattern both appear in the exam. In Sprechen (~15 min, 3 Teile) you make plans and promises (Ich werde …). In Schreiben (60 min, 3 Aufgaben) you may write about future intentions in an e-mail. In Hören (~40 min, 4 Teile) you hear predictions and assumptions with wohl. In Lesen (65 min, 5 Teile) you recognise future statements in texts. Since you need 60% to pass, knowing both ways to talk about the future is helpful.
