Indirect questions (Indirekte Fragen)

What are indirect questions?

Indirect questions are subordinate clauses built inside a polite frame such as Können Sie mir sagen …. As in all subordinate clauses, the conjugated verb moves to the end.

• Können Sie mir sagen, wo der Bahnhof ist? (Can you tell me where the station is?)
• Ich möchte wissen, ob der Kurs stattfindet. (I would like to know whether the course is taking place.)

W-questions keep the question word

If the direct question begins with a question word (wo, wann, wie, was, warum, wer, wohin), the indirect question keeps that same word, and the verb goes to the end.

• Wo ist die Post? → Können Sie mir sagen, wo die Post ist? (where the post office is)
• Wann kommt der Zug? → Wissen Sie, wann der Zug kommt? (when the train comes)
• Wie heißt du? → Ich möchte wissen, wie du heißt. (what your name is)

Yes/no questions use ob

If the direct question has no question word (a yes/no question), the indirect question is introduced by ob (whether/if).

• Findet der Kurs statt? → Ich möchte wissen, ob der Kurs stattfindet. (whether the course takes place)
• Kommst du mit? → Sag mir, ob du mitkommst. (whether you are coming along)
• Ist das Geschäft offen? → Können Sie mir sagen, ob das Geschäft offen ist? (whether the shop is open)

Politeness frames

Indirect questions are mostly used to sound polite. Useful frames:

• Können Sie mir sagen, … (Can you tell me …)
• Wissen Sie, … (Do you know …)
• Ich würde gern wissen, … (I would like to know …)
• Darf ich fragen, … (May I ask …)

Example: Können Sie mir sagen, wann der nächste Bus fährt? (Can you tell me when the next bus leaves?)

Direct vs indirect questions

Direct question	Indirect question

Wann kommt der Zug?	Wissen Sie, wann der Zug kommt?
Findet der Kurs statt?	Ich möchte wissen, ob der Kurs stattfindet.
Kommst du mit?	Sag mir, ob du mitkommst.

Notice how the verb moves from position 2 in the direct question to the end in the indirect question.

Common mistakes

• Wrong: Können Sie mir sagen, wo ist der Bahnhof? — Correct: … wo der Bahnhof ist (verb to the end, no inversion).
• Wrong: Ich möchte wissen, wenn der Kurs stattfindet. — Correct: Ich möchte wissen, ob der Kurs stattfindet (yes/no question needs ob, not wenn).
• Wrong: Wissen Sie, dass der Zug kommt? — Correct: Wissen Sie, wann der Zug kommt? (use the question word, not dass).
• Wrong: Sag mir, kommst du mit. — Correct: Sag mir, ob du mitkommst (keep subordinate word order with ob).
• Wrong: Ich würde gern wissen, wie heißt du. — Correct: … wie du heißt (verb at the end).

Relevance for the Goethe B1 exam

Indirect questions are very important for the Sprechen module (~15 min, 3 Teile), where polite questions help you negotiate and ask for information. In Schreiben (60 min, 3 Aufgaben) frames like Ich würde gern wissen, ob … make an e-mail more formal. In Hören (~40 min, 4 Teile) and Lesen (65 min, 5 Teile) you must understand them in dialogues and texts. With a pass mark of 60%, mastering verb-final word order here clearly helps.
